FedWatch tool shows 84% odds of a Fed hold, 90% odds of a December hike
Traders are pricing an 84% chance the Fed holds rates steady next week and a 90% chance of a December hike, while the Franc weakens as a funding currency.
Retail traders watching rate probabilities have fresh numbers to work with. The CME FedWatch Tool shows an 84% probability that the Federal Reserve will hold interest rates steady next week, alongside a 90% chance of a rate hike in December. The split matters for anyone whose platform displays implied rate paths or Fed meeting odds.
The picture is less settled than those figures suggest. Fed Chair Kevin Warsh declined last week to give guidance on the timing or necessity of future hikes, leaving the December odds exposed to incoming data and headlines. Platforms that surface Fed commentary alongside rate probabilities will show that gap between pricing and guidance.
Oil is the other input. Prices rose after a drone attack on Saudi Aramco's Shaybah oil field that caused two casualties, and Ukraine carried out large-scale drone strikes on critical Russian oil infrastructure this week. Surging crude feeds inflation fears, which in turn supports expectations of a Fed hike and can lift the Dollar.
On the other side of the USD/CHF pair, the Franc keeps facing headwinds. A widening interest rate differential between the United States and Switzerland, plus selling pressure from carry trades, has made the Franc an attractive funding currency. Investors borrow in Franc and sell it to move into higher-yielding assets, pressuring the currency.
The Swiss National Bank meets four times a year, once every quarter, and aims for annual inflation below 2%. With US borrowing costs expected to stay elevated and Swiss rates among the lowest globally, the rate gap remains the main driver for CHF crosses.
For traders running this on their setup, check that your platform or API has the current FedWatch probabilities loaded before the meeting, and confirm your USD/CHF and oil instruments are active. If you track rate path widgets, verify they refresh after Warsh's remarks. Spreads around the Fed decision and oil headlines can widen, so check quoted levels before relying on them.
